Pig Farming
• Scotland
has over 470,000 pigs. 41,000 of these make up the breeding herd.
• 58,000 tonnes of pig meat is produced worth £150
million.
• Scotland has almost 10% of the UK pig herd.
• 800 holdings have pigs. A third of these holdings are
in the North East.
The pig industry
is Scotland is fairly compact and concentrated. Animals are produced
to high welfare standards. Almost all Scottish production is quality
assured through Quality Meat Scotland.
Meat
from pigs goes into our bacon butties, ham for our packed lunch,
pork roast for our Sunday dinner and many of the other pork based
products that we eat on a regular basis!
